Practice CV Kathryn Findlay - Background Raised on a farm in Angus, Findlay went onto study at the AA School of Architecture in London and graduated in 1979. Her practice Ushida Findlay was the originator of the now in vogue curvilinear architecture, with her first major building the Truss Wall House in 1993 in Japan. In 2001, Findlay made her name with a starfish-plan design for a country house in England - Grafton New Hall. Ushida Findlay gained this project by winning the Royal Institute of British Architects’ competition in 2001 for a proposed English country house. Findlay is passionate about site expression. Her current focus is the modernity of traditional materials and building techniques. Dubbed ‘future-rustic’, her Poolhouse 2 is described by the critics as ‘disproportionately significant’. Kathryn Findlay became an honorary architecture professor at Dundee University in 1999. Findlay received an architecture scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education for postgraduate research at Tokyo University. In 2005, she was awarded the Chair of Architecture and Environment at the University of Dundee. Findlay is currently completing projects in Doha: a Museum and two grand houses, one for Qatar's Minister of Culture, The Beach Palace is now complete. Recently, Ushida Findlay Architects have been commissioned to undertake a Feasibility Master plan for the York Art Gallery. An extraordinary carved timber arched roof space over the main gallery, designed by Edward Taylor in 1870, had been sealed off since the 1950s. Following its rediscovery, Ushida Findlay have been appointed to reveal this incredible space to the public.
